Riverfront Wins National Gardening Association Award

A Youth Garden Grant has been awarded to the Children’s Learning Garden at Groton’s Riverfront Children’s Center. Riverfront’s program is one of only 100 selected for this award by the National Gardening Association from more than 1,000 children’s gardening programs across the United States.

Feb 19, 2010 10:01 AM - Youth Garden Grants are supported by a partnership of the National Gardening Association and the Home Depot. Riverfront’s award includes a $500.00 gift card to Home Depot for the purchase of gardening supplies and a curriculum package of books and materials for teachers.

The National Gardening Association awards Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs that emphasize educational focus, nutrition or plant-to-food connections, environmental awareness, and social aspects of gardening such as leadership development and community support.

Winning gardens represent a high level of commitment to youth gardening, combining clear goals with curricular connections and careful planning that exemplify sustainable programs. These exemplary school and community projects engage children and young people as learners, explorers, leaders, and nurturers in outdoor garden settings.

The Riverfront Children’s Center is a 501-(c) (3), nonprofit corporation, licensed by the State of Connecticut, and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC.) Riverfront provides high quality, affordable childcare and educational services while comprehensively nurturing the unique needs of children and their families. We envision a community where all children are safe and receiving the highest quality education regardless of racial, ethnic, cultural or socio-economic background.
