About Chorus of Westerly

The Chorus of Westerly was founded in 1959 on the strong beliefs and principles of its founder and current Music Director, George Kent, who is committed to including children eight and over as full members of the Chorus. In fact, Chorus America has recognized that the Chorus of Westerly is the only chorus of its kind in the nation that regularly includes children as singers in all of its concerts. Over the forty-seven years of Chorus performances, media reviews and awards to the Chorus and its Music Director have consistently provided validation of the positive results of the rigorous rehearsals and training necessary to sing the challenging repertoire. The singing membership has doubled in size from just over 100 voices in 1959 to today’s 200 singers. The present membership includes singers ages eight to ninety-four representing a variety of socio-economic circumstances.

The Chorus of Westerly maintains an ambitious year-round schedule of concerts, regularly performed to capacity audiences. Two classical concerts each year, in spring and fall, are presented with the Boston Festival Orchestra and guest soloists. The Christmas Pops concerts have become so popular that a third performance was added. The holiday season culminates with seven presentations of A Celebration of Twelfth Night, a musical/theatrical extravaganza featuring over three hundred performers. Finally, in June, the Summer Pops concert in Westerly’s eighteen-acre Wilcox Park consistently draws an audience of twenty-five thousand from the entire extended community and from neighboring states. The Chorus has performed eight U.S. premieres of British works and made three major tours abroad: Great Britain in 1981 and 1995, and Italy in 1987. Performing in such venues as Westminster Abbey, King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, the Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds, and St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican has provided adults and children with an experience of outstanding and lasting educational value.

The George Kent Performance Hall, originally the Immaculate Conception Church, is renowned for outstanding acoustics and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Performance Hall was recently renovated and expanded to allow for greater function as a performance center and as a resource for the community. Audiences are drawn not only from the Westerly/Pawcatuck area but also throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut. The concert hall seats 440 so that 880 patrons attend the classical concerts; 1,320 come to Christmas Pops; 3,080 to the Twelfth Night performances; and 25,000 children and adults from all parts of New England, New York and New Jersey attend the free Summer Pops concert.
